Thoroughly Acquainted

Words to meditate upon today:

“Be much alone with God, and take time to get thoroughly acquainted. Converse over everything with Him. Unburden yourself wholly –every thought, feeling, wish, plan, doubt– to Him…He wants not merely to be on good terms with you, but to be intimate.”

Horatius Bonar

Religion4All is an idea: that every human being (no matter their race, religion, sexuality, social status, lifestyle, or any other possible factor) is LOVED by God; just … as … they are.

We all are loved by God, and NO religion or person has a monopoly on it. Every single person on this planet is loved equally by God … SO many are cut off from God because they are told they don’t belong. God loves everyone … we ALL are beautiful creations … we don’t need to cringe when we hear the words “God”, or “religion”, or their judgments … God LOVES us all!

There is no requirement to change in order to be LOVED by God, or to LOVE God. God is LOVE, and LOVE is God … period. There is no one who God loves more than anyone else … there are only those who choose to LOVE more … to love God more, and consequently then to love each other more. In doing so, we grow closer to God … and know God.

By opening our hearts, and minds to God (free of boundaries like religion, or social trends); by LOVING God … we are exactly where we are meant to be. If we maintain that openness, never allowing any person or event to make us close our hearts, we will be guided by God to be who we are meant to be.

In that space of openness we can then live a life of LOVE, and be guided to where we are meant to be … forever in LOVE.

Visions of …

My meditations today were on the topic of visions (from the quote in my prior post, “The Deepest Blue“).  I began having visions around the age of twenty, when my heart first was opened to how intimate a relationship with God can be.  To this day I still recall, in vivid detail, the most powerful vision that I’ve ever had:

I was in my mid-twenties and it was my first trip to London.  I walked everywhere, and found myself at St. Paul’s Cathedral.  I was blown away by the spectacular beauty of the murals adorning the ceiling, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, so I leaned forward to get a better look.  I placed my hand on the marble pillar next to me, to steady myself, and WHAM … it was like a bolt of lightning shot through my entire body.  I was paralyzed for what seemed like minutes as so many pictures flooded my mind … not just pictures though, emotions!  It was like I felt a lifetime of emotions from the person whose life I was getting a glimpse of … all packed into what probably was just a few seconds.  My system was so overwhelmed that it was all I could do to sit down … tears were pouring out of my eyes; tears of joy.  That man had a happiness that I had never known … it was breathtaking.  I wandered around St. Paul’s for about four more hours, and the tears just kept coming … intermittently with time.

It was a vision that changed my life.  As the child of a Christian missionary, and a conservative Christian at the time, I adamantly believed what I “knew to be the truth” … that being what I had been taught my whole life.  Suddenly, my eyes were opened to possibilities I had never even dreamed of. Who was that man in my vision?  Why had I had the vision?  Was it some sort of past life experience?  All sorts of things that boggled my mind at the time.  I think that’s how God wants us to be though … in awe and wonder.  In retrospect, I think God gave me that vision as a gift … so that I could eventually learn to grow to an intimate relationship with my Creator … free of the limiting structures that man wants to impose.

Since that time, I have had a lot more visions, although very few as strikingly powerful.  Sometimes they will be visions that reveal a deception … where I will be floating above listening to the person trying to deceive me.  Sometimes my visions are a visit from my mother, or someone that I never have known.  As I began a period of my life where I made a lot of bad decisions, my visions grew frightening at times.  I didn’t know why this was at the time, it’s only in retrospect that I can see that the visions were simply showing me the error of my ways.  Still, I grew to fear my visions … and I also grew to fear what others would think of me if I would share my visions with them.  I got to a point where I only shared my visions with a select few, who I knew would not think I was crazy for saying so.

I share this because I have come to a crossroads in my life … a time for deciding.  I really have already made the decision … to devote my life to wherever, and whatever, God wants me to do or be.  Whether that means staying in the music world, but coming from a spiritual place, or moving on to something else … I don’t know, I really haven’t the faintest clue.  The interesting thing about giving your life to God, and following Divine guidance, is that you perpetually have no idea what will happen … you just have to trust.  Because of the depth of my relationship with God, I have reached a place where I trust completely … and want to dedicate my life to that.

The thing is, when you don’t know what will happen, or what you will confront … you end up facing your greatest fears before they ever happen.  Such was the case today, in my meditations.  As I meditated on Crazy Horse’s quote, I felt my fears come forward, “What if this means that you will start having more and more visions??!  You’ve only been having a handful of visions each year, what if it becomes a daily thing???  What if people start to think you’re crazy because of it?  What if … what if??”

So, as I have learned to do in order to keep my heart chakra open (and constantly connected with God) I confronted my fears and accepted them … I didn’t fight them, or try to run away from them.  I simply accepted them.  There are MANY people, from every religion, who had people think such things about them.  St. John would have probably been locked away in a psych-ward in modern day times.  It doesn’t matter where I am, or what I am doing … the only thing that matters is that I am open, connected to God, and following where God guides me to be.  That’s it.

Joseph Campbell

Another great post from Paolo Coelho’s blog; on quotes by Joseph Campbell.  It is SO important to be open to wherever God guides us to go … that can be scary, but we must trust God.  It’s the ultimate “Trust Fall” … and if we do it, we will find that everything worked out the way it should have … in retrospect :-).

Joseph Campbell is another proof that if we are following our dreams, things will come to us in the exact timing. Even so, we do not always have the courage to choose our destiny.
Below, some of his thoughts:

When you attend college, you don’t do what you desire, but you only seek to learn what is necessary to get the diploma. And this is not always the best option.

‘In my case, I was granted a scholarship and went to the University of Paris. As I arrived in Europe, I discovered James Joyce, Picasso, Mondrian – all that modern art group. Then, I went to Germany and started to study Sanskrit and got involved with Hinduism. Right after that came Jung; everything was opening up, from all sides.

‘I returned to the University and said: “Look, I don’t want to spend my life trying to learn only what you want to teach me.”

‘I had taken all the necessary classes for the title; I just had to write the damned thesis. If I didn’t write it, they wouldn’t let me study further and so it was time to say: go to hell.

‘I moved to the countryside and spent five years reading. I never got my doctor title. I learned to live with the minimum possible, that gave me freedom and a wonderful time.

‘Courage is necessary to do what we desire, once others always have a plan for us. Being aware of that, I decided to follow my dream: I didn’t know how I spent these five years, but I knew I would survive another five, if it was necessary.

‘I recall an occasion in which I had a one-dollar bill in a dresser’s drawer and I knew that as long as it was there, I could still count on my resources. It was great. My only responsibility was toward my own life and toward my choices.

‘In truth, there was a moment in which I thought: “Gee, I would like someone to tell me what to do.”

‘Being free implies choosing your path, and each step can change our destiny – what’s very frightening sometimes. But today, looking back, I see that my days were perfect: whatever I needed came exactly when I needed it. At the time, all I needed was to read for five years. I did it and that was essential for me.

‘As Schopenhauer says, when you see what you have overcome, you have the impression that you have followed a plot that had already been written. However, at the moment of action, you seem to be lost in a storm: surprise after surprise, and many times with no time to breathe, having to take decisions all the time. Only later will you understand that each surprise, each decision, made sense.’

Father

Wow, my meditations today were deep … in truth, it took two meditation sessions to really feel like I got what God wanted for me from the quote I was meditating on (from my prior post, “Siddhartha“).

It’s interesting to me how, just when we think we have “arrived” at a certain place … a place of having worked through all of those ancient barriers within … another reveals itself.

The Buddha’s quote was about loving yourself … that you could search far and wide, but you will not find anyone more worthy of your love … than yourself.

So I concentrated myself on this task.  I did something I don’t do very often any more … I created a solid shell around me; one that would keep any and all outside interference away.  All of the bonds I have with friends, loved ones, or anyone else that I keep my heart open for … I turned those bonds inward on myself … for that hour of time, I was an island alone in the world … just myself, and God.  It felt good … at first.

For some reason I began thinking about my father.  My father is a missionary.  When I was four years old he left a lucrative job to become a missionary.  I never really thought about it at the time, I was only a child and it was simply the reality of my world.  When my mother died, after four long years of fighting cancer, my father was hell-bent (pardon the expression, lol) on finding a replacement wife.  Not only did he have two children; me at age 11, and my brother who was 13 … but as a Christian missionary, he could not have sex outside of marriage.  I didn’t learn about that motivation until later in life … but sure enough, he had told my oldest sister that he simply couldn’t be without sex any longer.  So, he began dating immediately after my mom was buried, got engaged months later, and the marriage was roughly nine months after my mother passed away.  As a child, I kept looking to my dad to fill the void within me from my mother’s death … and instead, I ended up losing him as well.

All of this is ancient history in my life … been there, worked through it with my dad in my twenties, we went through counseling, and we have been fine ever since.  So I was wondering why all of this was coming up yet again.  I felt a prompting from God that I needed to get up and write my dad … to tell him about the spiritual changes, and transformations in my life … to ask him about his own spiritual transformation, and find out about who he is/was as a person … instead of the fantasy that every child builds up in their head … that their parents are either some sort of super-hero, or super-villain.

I went back to meditate again, after writing my dad, as I felt there were still things to process … and something that God wanted to reveal to me.  As I began meditating on the Buddha’s words again it became clear.  Ultimately, some part of me still believed I was unlovable.  As a child I took my dad’s repeated rejection of me and after years of fighting against it … I finally came to the conclusion that I was simply unlovable.  In a large sense … ever since then I have been on a quest to find that person, or career, or accomplishment … that would convince me that I was lovable.

It’s amazing, isn’t it?  The power parents wield in the lives of their children … decades can go by, and we still deal with these things.  The younger the child when it happens, the deeper the scar.  Anyone who can make it to adulthood having had a good childhood, with loving parents … should be HUGELY grateful for such a gift.  We are shaped by them in more ways than we know … and often times the parents don’t even realize the damage they did.

I am looking forward to hearing back from my dad … he’s in his mid-seventies now.  It will be a good thing to get to know him in this way … before his soul goes to be with God.  I am glad that God revealed this to me today for more than just that reason though … now I can continue to love myself, and know that I am worthy of that love. 🙂

Siddhartha

Noble words to ruminate upon:

You can search throughout the entire universe for someone
who is more deserving of your love and affection than
you are yourself, and that person is not to be found anywhere.
You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe
deserve your love and affection.

Fantasies

“Love is a cunning weaver of fantasies and fables.” – Sappho

Who doesn’t love a good fantasy?  Wherein all of the best things exist somewhere down the road and, even if there is some bad, it will surely be SO outweighed by the blissful good … that it is a no-brainer where you want to end up.  It’s very easy to live in these fantasies … we can spend entire lives either dreaming them up, or chasing after them.

On one level you want to allow for your dreams, and in part these are fueled by fantasies … so fantasies shouldn’t be denied or fought off.  They are a natural part of our natures … we certainly should not be shutting ourselves down to what is natural.  The fantasy should not become all-consuming in your life though.  We should be able to be happy in the life that we have, while dreaming and fantasizing of what may be.

If our dreams and fantasies cause us to resent the people and things that are in our lives in the very real here and now?  Well then, that is a pretty good sign that something is wrong.  God wants everyone to feel loved for who they are … not just the idealized version of who you want for a lover, friend, or colleague.  Remember those very important real people in your lives … go out of your way to do something sweet and kind for them, just to say, “You are loved.”

I say this in the “you” … but it really was myself who was chastened for this by God during my meditations.  I have ears to hear, however, and will act accordingly … I will strive to find the Tao … the middle place where both are valued and loved … neither one greater or more valued than the other. 🙂

Inner Struggles

Another beautiful post by one of the most influential authors in my life … Paolo Coelho.  I enjoy his blog:

Inner struggles

by PAULO COELHO on MAY 19, 2012

I am always struggling with myself, but I am very optimistic in this sense.
People are realizing more and more that happiness is freedom, and freedom is to be able to “travel light”, not possessing a lot of things, because at the end of the day, the things start to possess you.
I remember that I considered to buy a castle here in France: I went to see some.
One day I realized that if I buy a castle, I cannot think about anything but taking care of it. Therefore, I bought a small watermill, so to keep it is very easy, and I have time to go to the mountains, to walk, do spend my life in the way that I would like. In short: the less you have to keep, the more you have in freedom.

If I look back at my life I see many occasions where society tried to make me conform to “normality”. This resulted in three hospitalizations in an asylum when I was a teenager (which I describe in my book Veronika decides to die), torture when I was a young adult by the hands of the paramilitaries, and many defeats.
You could look at these experiences and say “Paulo’s life is tragic” but I don’t see it that way.
What I do see is someone trying to remain true to oneself. Yes there is a price but I believe that life tends to be very generous to those that are brave enough to take these risks.
In a word, I’ve always had faith in life, even when I thought “God forgot me”.
Be happy with your contradictions.

“Make you feel my love” – Adele

Here’s my latest tearful experience meditating on an Adele song … one of these days I’m sure I’ll move on to a new artist, I’m just getting so much from her two albums.  For those who haven’t read my prior postings on how I have started listening to Adele songs, here’s the short version:

The desperation and depths of love that her lyrics, and voice, and soul evoke made me start thinking of these songs as if God were singing those words to me.  Because God DOES love us that desperately.  This particular song fits that bill even more than any other song I have posted of hers.

When the song got to the part where the lyrics are “I’d go hungry, I’d go black and blue … I’d go crawling down the avenue” – images of Jesus being beaten and dying flashed through my head.  It didn’t stop there though.  Suddenly my head was filled with every martyr, from every religion, who gave their life for loving God … and to spread that love to others.  That is what God has done as well … God literally is not just throwing everything at our feet; God is actually dying for us over, and over.  It’s not just an unconditional love that sits back and takes rejection after rejection from us … it’s a desperate love that would suffer anything for us … just to have us return that love.

If that’s not enough to bring a tear to your eye … well …

I found myself wondering if I myself would make the sacrifice that those martyrs made … because really what they did was out of love.  It wasn’t that they just believed in a religion so strongly that they refused to back down … it was that they were SO IN LOVE with God.  They embraced God being in love with them, and they returned that love to the utmost level they ever could.

I can’t realistically say what I would or wouldn’t do in some sort of drastic situation.  I can say though, that I am in love with God … and that the thought of wounding God so deeply as to deny that love … is nothing I would ever do.  When I reached that place in my meditation … I was actually able to turn the song around again, and actually sing those lyrics back to God, and really truly mean them.

Here are the lyrics … I hope that viewing this song from this perspective will touch with the the reality of how ridiculously much God loves you … and how much God wants to be loved by you.

Make You Feel My Love – Adele

When the rain
Is blowing in your face
And the whole world
Is on your case
I could offer you
A warm embrace
To make you feel my love

When the evening shadows
And the stars appear
And there is no – one there
To dry your tears
I could hold you
For a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you
Haven’t made
Your mind up yet
But I would never
Do you wrong
I’ve known it
From the moment
That we met
No doubt in my mind
Where you belong

I’d go hungry
I’d go black and blue
I’d go crawling
Down the avenue
Know there’s nothing
That I wouldn’t do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging
On the rolling sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change
Are blowing wild and free
You ain’t seen nothing
Like me yet

I could make you happy
Make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn’t do
Go to the ends
Of the Earth for you
To make you feel my love,

To make you feel my love.

The Divine One

My words for meditation today:

“Your relationship with God is the same as your relationship with the sun.  If you hid from the sun for years and then chose to come out of your darkness, the sun would still be shining as if you had never left.  You don’t need to apologize.  You just pick your head up and look at the sun.  It’s the same way when you decide to turn towards God – you just do it.  If, instead, you allow guilt and shame to interfere, that’s just your ego blocking the Divine Force.  You can’t offend the Divine One; its very nature is light, love, compassion, protection, and giving.  You can’t make it stop loving you.  It’s just like the sun.  You can’t make the sun stop shining on you; you can only choose not to look at it.  The moment you look, you’ll see it’s there.

——-

God’s nature is eternal, conscious bliss.  No matter what you’ve done, you are not going to be the one that ruins it.

——-

Contemplate this, and let go of the idea of a judgmental God.  You have a loving God.  In truth, you have love itself for a God.  And love cannot do other than love.  Your God is in ecstasy and there’s nothing you can do about it.  And if God is in ecstasy, I wonder what He sees when He looks at you.”

C. S. Lewis

Words to further the wonderful meditations that I have been blessed with:

“Christ did not die for men because they were intrinsically worth dying for, but because He is intrinsically love, and therefor love infinitely.”

“Miracles” – C. S. Lewis

Christ Within

“They (those who love him) are the ones he chose specially long ago and intended to become true images of his Son, so that his Son might be the eldest of many brothers (and sisters).” – Romans 8:29, the Bible

My meditations of late have led me back to my spiritual roots, but viewing them from a different perspective from how I was raised: the idea that Christ lives within each and every one of us.  It is clear to me from this particular verse, and many others talking about miracles, that we are intended to LITERALLY be like Christ … not just in kindness, and love, but in all things … miracles included.

To many people, and to myself as a part of organized religion in my youth, that looks like praying fervently for what we want or believe to be God’s will … and then hoping beyond hope for a miracle.  I now see this verse (and really all of them) differently … Christ REALLY does live within us, and wants to be one with us in every way, shape, and form.  Jesus Christ was one man whom many believe to also be God, but Christ (meaning God) living within all of us was the gift that God has given to us … that we ALL can be Christ.

Am I saying that we can be, or are, gods?  No.  What I am saying is that if we embrace an intimate relationship with God … if we take God into every part of us (and I mean EVERY part … even/especially the parts we fear, or think God won’t want to see), and become one with God … in that blessed union, we are Christ re-born.  Each one of us has this ability, and it is merely a matter of making that connection with God and following wherever God leads … never closing our hearts, and allowing God to blossom through us, and to become us.  When we are fully one with God, who can then discern where God and man/woman end or begin?

THAT is when, and how, miracles happen … when we are completely one with God, we simply follow God’s guidance.  If God guides us to do something, we put our energy into following that guidance … and watch what happens: a miracle!

This is something to me that is beyond religion, or man-made structures … I believe that everyone can achieve this relationship with God … nobody need adhere to somebody else’s structure in order to know God.  God is infinite, you cannot place infinity within a structure.

“But … if there’s no structure, then it will all be chaos.  There must be structure!” Is what I hear to counter this from each separate religion in the world.

There is only one structure big enough to encompass the enormity of God: LOVE:

“Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” 1 Corinthians 13:7, the Bible

Know the Christ within you, be one with God, and go forward knowing that if what you do is based in LOVE, then you are indeed one with God.  That is all you will ever need.

“I’m Free”

– from “Tommy”, by The Who

I found myself ecstatically humming, singing, and thinking this song throughout the day today … as a result of some pretty major meditative breakthroughs.  God is SO good.  If you aren’t ecstatic … seek after God until you get there … and then you will just keep going; it won’t even be work :-).  God is beyond the ultimate drug … anything else pales in comparison.

Words for my meditations today:

“Love one another and help others to rise to the higher levels, simply by pouring out love. Love is infectious and the greatest healing energy.”

The Cosmic Christ

A beautiful post; thank you for so vulnerably and beautifully sharing what Christ has shown you, Stephanie.  The Christ within me moved me as I read your words … I could relate with so many similarities.  I too talk, and listen, and laugh with Christ, and have done so from the time I was a small child (Jesus has a very strong sense of humor, I find).  I am SO happy to be reunited with that depth of a relationship (being what I knew as an innocent child, who believed without doubt or question) as an adult.  It took a lot of time, and inner work, to get back to that place … but Christ is patient, and all too willing to help those who help themselves.

If I were to share, in the “real world”, that I talk to and receive actual, literal guidance from a Being/Voice that lives within me … and that I follow where that Being guides me?  I would get very strange looks indeed … most do not have the “ears to hear” such things … it is far easier to go to a church and follow the words of a pastor … but that is not Christ, it is the pastor (as well intentioned as he/she might be).

Miracles

Words to continue to meditate on … I really have gotten a lot from when I began my meditations today (thanks Katrina for starting me off).  Although it has taken a bit of a different track than my prior post for meditation (Raw Truth); these thoughts on living life, and even miracles (note my last post “Tree of Life“) began to germinate as I mediated on Katrina’s “Truth” post … so thanks for that) :-).  Truthfully though, I follow my meditations wherever I feel led by God … so ultimately I am grateful to God for putting me on this path, and revealing new things to me today about living life, and how we use our energies and intent.

The miracle, or the power, that elevates the few is to be found in their industry, application, and perseverance under the prompting of a brave, determined spirit.” – Mark Twain
