The False Self

This morning I had a vision while pondering my prior post, “A Mental Idol – words to meditate on from Eckhart Tolle“.  Along with the quotes in that post, I have been giving thought to the spiritual awakening that was described by the author, Eckhart Tolle.  He had been suicidally depressed and one night he thought, “I can’t live with myself anymore.”  Something about that touched something off within him, he then started thinking that perhaps the self he couldn’t live with was separate from what felt true to him, his “True Self” (as I have referred to it many times on this blog).  That was it … once that hit home for him, he simply was spiritually awakened and has since gone on to become one of the most influential spiritual teachers of our time.

The vision that I had occurred while I was driving (don’t worry, no lives were harmed as the result of this vision, lol).  I have been spending a great deal of time over the past year focusing on refining my understanding and knowledge of this concept of the “True Self” … however, what was on my mind this morning is what I have since come to refer to as the “False Self”.  While I was driving my mind was doing its usual thing; whirring around like the well-oiled machine it has been trained to be … and then the vision hit me.  I saw a sort of amoeba-like being of energy; constantly expanding out … constantly furthering it’s dominion and influences … THAT is the “False Self”.

That part of yourself that is ever analyzing the way around problems, ever deciphering the secret codes of the world to open doorways to new realms of power?  It doesn’t even have to be so grandiose sounding … it could just be you one-upping the person who is your nemesis at work.  It could be you getting some sort of subtle revenge on the ex who broke your heart.  Yup, that’s the “False Self” … it not only takes over your life, it slowly but surely replaces any vestige of your “True Self” as well.  Some people perhaps have never even known their “True Self” … they were trained early with only the “False Self” as their notion to right and wrong, or the way the world should be.  I know for myself there was a period of my life where almost every moment was an extension of that “False Self”.  There would literally only be a few minutes out of each day where I would let my “True Self” out … I’d stop and meditate, or do some breathing exercises … and then BACK into the fray that was life as my “False Self”.  It’s EXHAUSTING!

It doesn’t have to be that way though.  You can be your True Self all the time … every minute of every day.  If you don’t know that part of yourself, take some time to meditate … connect to whatever your own personal concept of God is, and allow yourself to be filled with Love.  It may take some work … we have been SO conditioned that not only do we NEED the “False Self” in order to be successful, we have come to actually look at it as a good thing … a defense mechanism that protects us … when really it just consumes the soul and leaves you hollow, empty, and ultimately unhappy.

You can have all the riches in the world and it wouldn’t matter if it is brought about by the False Self.  In virtually every religion in the world there is some sort of paralell concept … in the Bible, for instance, it talks about being able to identify “the fruit” of your actions.  The “fruit” of the True Self brings life and happiness, the “fruit” of the False Self shrivels into decaying unhappiness.  These ideas end up getting hijacked and changed into morality laws for everyone to abide by … but it’s not about the letter of the law, it is about the Spirit … about whether it is the True Self, or the False Self.

Quiet your mind … let that constantly contorting “False Self” just fall away … ignore its pleas for attention.  Allow a fire to light in your heart, and a blossom to unfurl its petals in your mind … connect to the Source of Love … and open to the beauty and happiness that is life as your True Self.

Peace and Love.

Religion4All is an idea: that every human being (no matter their race, religion, sexuality, social status, lifestyle, or any other possible factor) is LOVED by God; just … as … they are.

We all are loved by God, and NO religion or person has a monopoly on it. Every single person on this planet is loved equally by God … SO many are cut off from God because they are told they don’t belong. God loves everyone … we ALL are beautiful creations … we don’t need to cringe when we hear the words “God”, or “religion”, or their judgments … God LOVES us all!

There is no requirement to change in order to be LOVED by God, or to LOVE God. God is LOVE, and LOVE is God … period. There is no one who God loves more than anyone else … there are only those who choose to LOVE more … to love God more, and consequently then to love each other more. In doing so, we grow closer to God … and know God.

By opening our hearts, and minds to God (free of boundaries like religion, or social trends); by LOVING God … we are exactly where we are meant to be. If we maintain that openness, never allowing any person or event to make us close our hearts, we will be guided by God to be who we are meant to be.

In that space of openness we can then live a life of LOVE, and be guided to where we are meant to be … forever in LOVE.
