The Game Of Being Unenlightened
My words to meditate on for the day … on how we “play the game”. We make the choices and decisions that have us live in confusion, anxiety, depression, insecurity or self loathing. Then we go bounding about the earth with these decisions for how to live our lives affecting the flow of each day. We have the power to alter our course, to view the world differently … to be the author of our own reality. Peace and Love.

“Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions – we cannot be free.”
– Thich Nhat Hanh

“Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
– Jesus; the Bible, Luke 10: 38-42
~~~
“If somebody wants to remain unenlightened, it is absolutely his business to decide about it. If they want to play the game of being unenlightened, it’s perfectly okay. If you have become fed up with the world, if you are fed up with your anguish and anxiety and you have realized that now it is time to awake, then there is no difficulty. Nobody can prevent you. Nobody is preventing you. It is only your own decision to play the game as an unenlightened being or to play the game as an enlightened being. It is only a question of inner decision.”
Religion4All is an idea: that every human being (no matter their race, religion, sexuality, social status, lifestyle, or any other possible factor) is LOVED by God; just … as … they are.
We all are loved by God, and NO religion or person has a monopoly on it. Every single person on this planet is loved equally by God … SO many are cut off from God because they are told they don’t belong. God loves everyone … we ALL are beautiful creations … we don’t need to cringe when we hear the words “God”, or “religion”, or their judgments … God LOVES us all!
There is no requirement to change in order to be LOVED by God, or to LOVE God. God is LOVE, and LOVE is God … period. There is no one who God loves more than anyone else … there are only those who choose to LOVE more … to love God more, and consequently then to love each other more. In doing so, we grow closer to God … and know God.
By opening our hearts, and minds to God (free of boundaries like religion, or social trends); by LOVING God … we are exactly where we are meant to be. If we maintain that openness, never allowing any person or event to make us close our hearts, we will be guided by God to be who we are meant to be.
In that space of openness we can then live a life of LOVE, and be guided to where we are meant to be … forever in LOVE.
Caribbean Dream
(a description of my most recent epiphany while on a St. Martins vacation)
Caribbean teal lapped luxuriously over my eyelids and around my nostrils while seeping slowly between my lips. My limp limbs lolled rhythmically back and forth, back and forth … back … and forth.
Pictures splattered across my mind’s eye like subway posters on the walls outside a speeding train and I, the lone traveler, gazed out the window to gauge their meaning. The soundtrack for this inward sojourn are Jan’s insistent words, on loop,
“Why are you taking it so personally? Don’t you know? There is nothing that anybody does that is about you. Nothing is about you, it is about them. Nothing is personal to you, it’s simply each person processing their own shit. Even if they reject you, or leave you, or have an affair, or whatever … it’s not about you.”
Something clicked, and shifted … my muscles clenched for something to hold on to as I gasped in surprise.
That’s it.
It was as if the words NEEDED to be on loop, in order for me to actually get it … deep down … below the superficiality of intellectual banter and philosophical musings.
It’s not about me … nothing is about me … it’s all about them.
Relief washed over my spirit, more refreshing than even the crystalline beauty of the waters I floated in. My eyes drank in blue. My descending toes burrowed joyfully into the white sand below as a salty smile splayed widely into my reddened cheeks.
Even if my worst fears and suspicions were true … even if they thought my contributions weren’t as meaningful as theirs, or they didn’t respect me as much as the others, or thought I was not someone worth listening to … it doesn’t matter.
It’s not about me … it’s about them.
Most likely none of those fears or suspicions are true … and that doesn’t matter either. Finding or revealing “The Truth” doesn’t matter … there is no truth. There is just a world full of people each processing their own past, present and future programming.
Anyone’s actions are simply a reflection of what is inside of them … and they have nothing to do personally with me. It’s their inner workings; assumptions, presumptions, calculations, emotions and programming that are either holding them back or forwarding their future. Why worry about what anyone thinks when it is simply a reflection of their personal history … which none of us can ever know?
It might sound simple, or obvious … but as this realization truly hit home for me … the weight of the world lifted. All the fears, and paranoid scanning, all the years of worriedly wondering where the next attack would come from … and shifting, changing, adapting, melting and molding myself into whatever, whoever, could avoid the next attack.
The years I spent thinking, believing, that if anyone ever truly knew me they would reject me. If I ever opened myself enough for them to see my authenticity … the charade would be over and I would just be that bullied, violated and abused child with nowhere to hide … and no mask to hide behind.
There is no masquerade ball … it’s just been me with my many masks in a house of mirrors, and fear, and a volcanic rage to defend against anyone who happened to somehow slip past my defenses.
It was never about me at all. Every single fact I’ve been building my case with … has all been about them.
How freeing that is.
Wow.
I turned, and walked back to the beach … and the rest of my life to unfold.
The Tortured Self – A Vision
I had a vision today. These visions have happened to/for me since I was 20 … I never know when they are going to happen and I cannot make them happen at will. I can however put myself into a state where I am more open to seeing them … this often happens for me through meditation.
Today, however, I was not meditating. I was on a teleconference with a dozen or so other people, discussing topics around self awareness, personal development and duality.
– Flash back a couple of weeks ago –
I had a vision while focusing on my first chakra in a prolonged meditation session. I was exploring a cavern and I had recently discovered a new room. In coming out of this room I had the awareness that to my right was darkness … just darkness. I kept trying to look to my right, and it was as if I couldn’t even turn my head to the right to see. I continued with this intention for at least 15 minutes … waiting for the time to come where this cleared and I would be able to see into this place. It never happened, I was blind there.
– Now back to the teleconference –
One person was talking about the need to accept ones self. The leader interrupted and what she said sparked off this vision for me … while she was talking I felt energy pulsate from her through my heart chakra, which tightened and tingled all at the same time … it was as if I was experiencing the vision and listening to her at the same time:
“It is not enough to simply accept oneself.” she said, “It is much deeper than that. We are trained to view ourselves through our accomplishments … through our results.”
I am back in that underground chamber now … walking toward the place that has been blackened out from my mind’s eye.
“So if you tell anyone that they need to accept themself, they will immediately refer back to what they know … what their results are: how much money they have, what their relationships are, their power, their charm, etc. These are the things they have always used to feel accepted.”
I am rounding the corner and look to where the blackness was … and still is.
“What really needs to happen, what I had to take on for myself, is that we have to accept that we are spiritual beings in a human form. We have both a soulful essence, a spirit, and a human nature. That spirit is ALREADY whole and complete … right now! There is NOTHING that needs to be done to improve on it. YOU are already whole and complete … and you have a human nature that will always be there as well … and that human nature is flawed. You can’t focus on the human nature and exclude the true nature, the spirit … but that is what we do when we base our sense of worth on our results and our accomplishments.”
The blackness disappears and I see an emaciated man shackled to a wall … bleeding as if he had been tortured. I ran to him and broke the shackles out of the wall. I picked up his form, which felt light as a feather, and carried him into the new chamber I had just discovered a couple of weeks ago. There now was a pool glowing with light in the center of that room, and I gently lowered that poor, tortured man into the waters … his head propped on a rock and light glowing all around him, as if it was a psychadelic bathtub.
“That is the nature of Duality,” the speaker continued, “we always have the perfect soulful essence laying down right beside this flawed human nature. It is together that they are beautiful. You can’t try to make the human nature wrong for not being perfect, and you can’t remove the soulful essence from who you truly are … they’re not seperate, you are both simultaneously. That is the edge we must walk.”
As the man begins to heal … I see that he is me. I SEE that I have been torturing the human part of myself by constantly measuring my self worth by accomplishments. EVERY TIME I don’t get the results I want I was whipping him bloody. I feel a hollow feeling in my chest … horror. I go to him, and hug him, and ask him to forgive me. I try to merge with him and make him one with me … but it won’t take. I have been the torturer for far too long … it will take time for him to trust me enough … so that we can be equal, and whole, and complete, and beautiful … together.
You Can Only Forgive That Which You Face
I’ve been kind of amazed of late how MANY things linger around in that dusty attic we call our subconscious. I’ve been consciously going deep within and digging things up and it really is amazing the stuff that I find still unresolved within!
My opinion is that a lot of this is cultural. By and large we live in a culture that downplays the negative … we just don’t want to dwell on it. Someone talks about being abused and people cringe and uncomfortably comment,
“That’s in the past. Talking about it won’t help anything, just move on.” etc., etc., etc.
People don’t want to face the things that are uncomfortable, scary, or disturbing.
The problem with this is that ALL of that stuff is just hanging out in your subconscious! How’s your dream life? Do you have dreams that disturb you? Welcome to the window of your subconscious, where everything you’ve shoved down and left emotionally unresolved just hangs out and plays … and your body ultimately pays the price as its playground. The tension and stress from bitterness, regrets, and not fully forgiving literally eat you alive.
I’m not saying you should wallow around in all that crap … wallowing is very different from resolving and forgiving. It MIGHT be a good idea though to actively go in and discover what is there. Find out WHAT is eating you alive, so that you can actually save yourself from that gnawing beast within you.
An example, I was constantly told that I should get over having been abused my step-mother. Whatever the reason, whether “For the good of the family.” or just because it makes them uncomfortable … what that REALLY is saying is,
“Shut up, I don’t want to hear about it. Just stop talking about it and move on.” Or, in other words, “Shove it down deep inside of you and never bring it up again.”
By consciously going within to meditate and contemplate the full reality of what was SO … I have been able to forgive her. I can actually now look at the scenario and see exactly HOW she was a victim herself, just trying to survive like the rest of us. I didn’t downplay the abuse … there were some seriously messed up things that she did that affected me for decades. I accepted those things … I allowed them to be … I stopped fighting against them, excusing them or trying to escape them by shoving them down.
They simply were what was so … just the facts, without emotion.
Along with those facts were all the things that I did, and all of the things that other people contributed, and what was going on in life and the world … just the facts, without emotion.
Don’t downplay them … don’t shove them down. Allow them to be what they actually were … and face them … and then let them go … forgive. You can’t get to that last part though, forgiveness, without actually facing what is so. The more you diminish what was so, the more you allow whatever bitterness is there to creep inside you and fester.
Open it up … face it … and THEN let it go through genuine forgiveness and the power of Love.
Keep open that void where all that unresolved and festering ichor once resided and allow God’s LOVE to fill it instead. Let the golden glow of love into that place, and be happy. Rest.
Peace and Love.
Become a cool-head!
My words today – for meditating on our propensity to sabotage ourselves:
“People want to attain to a deeper integration. They want a certain tranquillity, a place inside which is
beyond distractions. When it comes though they become afraid, because then they feel that when
the anger, the so-called love, the hate, and all those passions and storms of the mind are left far
behind, they are disappearing. Then they suddenly become panicky. They feel as if life is slipping
from their hands, and the coolness feels like death. But coolness is real life, and if you can wait a
little longer you will see that.
*
Love will come back, but now it will be totally different and will have a different glow. It will be cool and
dispassionate – and when love is dispassionate it has a tremendous depth to it. A passionate love
is just on the surface. It makes too much noise but says nothing of worth. But when love becomes
cool, it has a depth. The ocean is silent, there is no storm, but the depth of the ocean is there.
A cool love is more like compassion. Passion is nothing! It is, in a way, destructive. It destroys you,
and it destroys the other with whom you have become related in it. Compassion is creative but it
has a coolness, because all integrity is cool.
*
So just wait a little. The old love will disappear and then a new love will be born – and there will be
a gap in between in which you will feel as if you are a nobody. But that has to be passed, and it is
part of growth. Before the new enters and after the old is no more, there is a discontinuity. But this
is very beautiful. Feel happy, and thankful. Become a cool-head!”
Peace like a river
I woke up with this song running through my head this morning … a truly powerful song, and this is a beautifully done (although somewhat turnicated) arrangement of it … sung by Daniel Martin Moore. Peace and Love.
By: Horatio G. Spafford
When peace, like a river, attendeth my way,
When sorrows like sea billows roll;
Whatever my lot, Thou has taught me to say,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
Refrain:
It is well, with my soul,
It is well, it is well, with my soul.
And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;
The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,
Even so, it is well with my soul.
The Mystery That We Are
My words to meditate on for today … regarding spiritual authenticity:
“The issue here is the belief that you know. You believe that you know who you are, you believe that you know the world, you believe that you know what existence is. What you actually know is your own mind. You don’t know existence. You have lost the mystery that you live in. We all lose the mystery that we are, the mystery that surrounds us, the mystery that brings us wonder, freshness, and freedom. We have made our world into a fossil.”
A. H. Almaas
– AND –
“What am I, really? The beautiful thing … is nobody can tell us what we are. Nobody can really tell us. Not in a way that’s going to be satisfactory to us. Our true nature is self-authenticating. When we bump into our true nature, it authenticates itself. Something inside us knows. This…is what has been sought for, longed for, looked for. This is it. Usually, it’s not what we expected …”
Sorrow’s Shaft
In continuation of my Past, Present, Future meditations; I have decided to single out different elements to meditate on. Here are my quotes to meditate upon for the day:
The Past – Sorrow
“When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight.”
~~~~~~~
“Grieving is a necessary passage and a difficult transition to finally letting go of sorrow – it is not a permanent rest stop.”
~ AND ~
“When I pulled out sorrow’s shaft
I showed you the way.
It is you who must make the effort.
Existence is sorrow.
Understand, and go beyond sorrow.
This is the way of brightness.”
